Equality and Diversity Policies

Over the past year, the Equality and Diversity team have been hard at work raising awareness of the rich religious, cultural, and racial diversity within the United Kingdom. Beaconsfield High School’s student body is made up of a wide variety of religions, and ethnicities, as well as some which are not at all present. Not only does creating greater multicultural awareness and inclusion help students with different backgrounds and needs succeed, but it encourages acceptance and helps prepare students to thrive in an exponentially diverse world.

This is the film Heidi, last year's Equality and Diversity Prefect filmed for the Year 7s who joined us in September 2020. The Prayer and Reflection room she refers to is now complete and a film showing what a wonderfully peaceful space it is can be found further down this page.

 Racial Injustices

The Equality and Diversity team have been particularly focused on raising awareness of racial injustices, through highlighting diverse histories and the heroes who have and continue to struggle and battle prejudice in all its forms. Below are a selection of films put together by the team:

Black History Lectures - Films put together for Black History Week

Hidden History - Films focussing on a figure or an event in BAME history

Share Your Story - Podcasts during which students or guests talk about race and discrimination issues they have faced.

Pride Society

As a school community, we continue to celebrate LGBT identities and pride history, remembering the progress that has been made, and reflecting on how far we have to go. Breaking down institutional racism, sexism, and homophobia, altering mindsets, and achieving change, can only be achieved through education.

Pride Society is a safe space running in two groups for years 7-9 and years 10-13 at lunchtimes which are open to anyone and everyone to drop by at any time. Pride Society is a great place to relax, hangout, ask questions, discuss topics that interest you or to meet new people! You can bring your lunch to each session and listen to other people’s thoughts and opinions, learn about different genders and sexualities, and join in on discussions about current affairs in the LGBT+ community.

For more information or if you want to talk about any LGBT+ related concerns or questions you have, you can talk confidentially to the pride support team via lgbtsupport@beaconsfieldhigh.bucks.sch.uk

Prayer and Reflection Room

Students worked incredibly hard transforming a bleak corner office into a warm and welcoming environment within which both pupils and staff – of all faiths and none – can take some time to themselves during an otherwise frenetic school day. Heartfelt thanks to the many students who have given generously of their time and energy to plan and develop this valuable amenity and to the parents for kindly donating materials and furnishings.

Crisp Packet Project

The Crisp Packet Project was started up by last year's Head Girl, Sahar and will be taken over by the current HG team. Sahar volunteers with Sufra NW London Foodbank in Brent and saw first-hand how food bank guests suffered when the weather turned colder. Relying on a very thin, worn-down sleeping-bag was not an adequate defence against pneumonia and hypothermia, and deaths due to freezing are common.

Through social media, Sahar heard about a woman called Pen Hutson in Hastings, who was making survival sheets and bivvy bags for Survival Streets UK. Sahar and her two deputies, Abbie and Flora, decided to join one of her workshops to learn how to make these life-saving blankets out of crisp packets.  The team has since held in-school workshops demonstrating how to make the bags and are encouraging students to donate empty packets or collect and make survival sheets themselves.  These have been donated to Watford charity Hand on Heart for their Winter Warmer packs.  Sahar, Abbie and Flora have since passed on the Crisp Packet mantle to the new HG team.  If you'd like to contact the team with any questions, their email is crisppacketproject@beaconsfieldhigh.bucks.sch.

Equality, Diversities and Charities SharePoint

If you are a student at Becky High, you can access the Equality, Diversities and Charities SharePoint. It contains information on a variety of current topics including anti-racism, the crisis in Yemen and the discrimination faced by the LGBTQ+ community.  There are recommendations for additional resources (i.e. books, podcasts, TV shows etc) to further enhance your understanding of these key global issues and the platform will be regularly updated with new resources for the three topics already available, as well as additional topics.
